WHALLEY’S Pickwick night has been saved after a funding crisis put its future in doubt.

Organisers had warned the event could fold as sponsorship from businesses had dried up.

But, following an emergency meeting this week, they have now vowed to go ahead with the festival.

Members of the Pickwick night committee said they were confident they would be able to raise the £5,000 needed to put on the event in December.

Neil Martin, committee chairman, said the closure warning was made as members felt daunted by the fundraising target, amid the continuing effects of the recession.

But he said: “We had a very long meeting deliberating what we could do to try and save this fantastic event and we decided that we would do whatever it takes to go ahead with it.

“As a committee we did not want to see such a fabulous event cancelled as we feared that it could be lost forever.”

Pickwick night is an annual event which has been running for 21 years, attracting hundreds of visitors each year.

Shops stay open until 9pm and traders in Victorian-style dress sell Yuletide gifts and fare during the evening which costs thous-ands of pounds to organise.

Funds raised are given to a local charity, or good cause.

Last year cash went towards buying a new wheelchair for Sabden teenager Hayley Smith.

Mr Martin said: “We have raised thousands over the years and it would be sad if we could not go ahead with it this year.

“We would be very grateful for any donations and support from local people and businesses to help us raise the £5,000 needed to keep it going.”

Main costs include road closures, signage, insurance, entertainment, and buying equipment.

The committee is due to hold another meeting in March with key funders of the event.
