AN ACCRINGTON charity is to develop Lancashire's first centre specialising in recycling old furniture.
Hyndburn Used Furniture Store on Fairfield Street, also known as HUFS, has in the past collected unwanted furniture for those in need, but sent any unfit items to landfill.
The group, formed in 2004, has now been awarded a grant to pilot a 'deconstruction' centre at the shop, as part of its new bulky waste collection contract with Rossendale Borough Council.
HUFS also works with Hyndburn Council, collecting waste electrical and electronic items, and offers training opportunities to unemployed people and volunteers.
The new centre will see old furniture that cannot be reused separated into materials ready for recycling, such as the wood, textiles and foam from a chair.
