PLANS to build a 60-bedroom care home for the elderly have been dealt a blow after councillors unanimously rejected the proposals.

Every member of the Nelson Committee voted against proposals for the building in Lowthwaite Drive, Nelson.

The decision was taken following protests from residents.

It went against recommendations made by council officers who were in favour of approving the project.

The Holmes Care Ltd, already have outline planning permission and have vowed to appeal the latest decision.

If the appeal is successful, Urban Roots, the agent for the applicant, said they will ask Pendle Council to pay the costs.

Murray Graham, of Urban Roots, said the care home would create around 30 jobs.

The application will be dealt with by the council’s development control committee because, if it is approved after appeal, the decision to refuse permission could cost the local authority more than £5,000.
