BOSSES at a growing Blackburn firm are looking to expand – but said they could quit the town in the process.

Managers at Accrol Papers are in talks with Blackburn with Darwen Council about taking over land next to their factory on the Roman Road Industrial Estate, Guide.

The firm, which manufactures toilet paper and kitchen rolls, said it had ‘brought forward’ its expansion plans because of rapid growth during the recession.

Bosses want to move onto council-owned land adjacent to its site, and are currently locked in talks with council chiefs over a potential extension.

But managing director Majid Hussain said the business, which employs 69 and turns over around £30million a year, had not ruled out quitting Blackburn to find a better site.

He said: “We are bringing our growth plans forward and so our expansion will be quicker than we previously anticipated.

“Under our old plans we would be okay on our current site for four years.

“But if we expand quicker, we will need larger premises in two years, which is why we are in talks over the site next to ours. We are hoping we can expand there but if not, we will have to look outside the area.

“We would prefer not to do that because a lot of our staff are born and bred in Blackburn.

"But there comes a point where if your expansion is being hampered, you have to move.”

Mr Hussain said the firm, which has almost doubled turnover in two years, hoped to expand into making wet wipes.

Blackburn with Darwen Council deputy chief executive Andrew Lightfoot said the site next door to Accrol was currently used as a vehicle depot.

He added: “There has been some contact between the company and the council, and discussions are underway.”

Accrol was founded in Accrington in 1993 and was last year nominated for a Lancashire Telegraph Business Award for company of the year.
