BUS routes in Darwen should be subsidised by the new town council if the borough council won’t do it, a member has claimed.
Dave Smith, the town council’s Labour representative for Sunnyhurst, wants to know if the precept raised in the town can be used to help smaller local bus firms run routes that Lancashire United has cut back to save money.
Coun Smith said: “Springvale has been really badly affected and there is no service on a Saturday. It’s crazy.
“I don’t think the borough council have negotiated with the small firms because I’m sure that they would be willing to take the routes on as long as they were supported a little.
“If the borough council aren’t willing, then I think the town council should be looking to it.”
Darwen Town Council has a budget of about £100,000 raised through a precept on council tax.
The cost for an average Band D house would be about £13.70.
A Band A house would be charged around an extra £9.13, and a Band H property £27.40.
