Talented young singers were given £1,000 when they bought African music to Accrington.

The 20-strong Bethany Choir from an orphanage in Tanzania performed three concerts at Accrington and Rossendale College.

During the evening of entertainment in the Coppice Theatre at the college, principal Stephen Carlisle presented the choir with a £1,000 cheque.

Staff and pupils at the college have already donated £3,000 to the choir this year from fund-raising events including a ‘bags and bling sale’ to selling bags of firewood.

John Brindle, college tutor, said: “I’ve seen the choir perform on dozens of occasions and the enthusiasm and joy these youngsters show when on stage is infectious.

“It’s virtually impossible to see them without clapping along.”
