A BURNLEY volunteer is helping the Government to shape its policy on further education.

Alex Chew, 19, has been touring the country to share her views on education for 14 to 19-year-olds.

As a member of the Government’s new 14 to 19 Learner Panel she is providing feedback of her further education experiences.

Alex, a technical apprentice at the Rolls Royce Barnoldswick site, is completing an apprenticeship at Blackburn-based training provider Training 2000.

She said: “I got involved with the scheme through an event at Training 2000.

“I was approached to become a member of the panel and thought that it sounded like a great opportunity and was something I definitely wanted to be a part of.

“I have attended events in London and Birmingham and I have another scheduled soon in London.

“At the meetings we are encouraged to share our personal experiences of education, both positive and negative, and it’s good to know that others may benefit from my feedback.”

The 14 to 19 Learner Panel advises the Government on how 14-19 education policy in England could be improved from a learner's point of view.

Alex said: “I am really enjoying my apprenticeship.

“I started to look at my next step whilst completing my A Levels and after a taster session at Training 2000 knew that an apprenticeship was for me.

“Two years down the line, I am in a great job and am gaining recognised qualifications to boot.”

Harold Farnworth, career development manager at Training 2000, said: “Alex is progressing really well on her apprenticeship and it’s clear to see how much she enjoys both her job and the training.

“I think she is well placed to be part of the 14-19 panel and know her views will a valuable asset to the initiative.”
