NELSON and Colne College has seen a dramatic rise in students signing up for catering and hospitality courses since its new facilities opened.

Its kitchens have already produced chefs who have been taken under the wings of critically acclaimed chefs such as Nigel Haworth, Rick Stein, Gordon Ramsey and Raymond Blanc.

But the Scotland Road college had far fewer numbers in catering and hospitality courses when it was on the split site. Now admissions have increased by a third. And bosses at the college have put on an extra classes to cater for the 100 full time students and the 30 work-based learners.

Assistant principal Judith Watson hopes the state-of-the art Hospitality and Catering Section will gain formal recognition for its ‘world class’ facilities, which include a top of the range Charvet production kitchen found in prestigious restaurants.

And the Michelin starred chef Nigel Haworth who runs Northcote Manor has already earmarked six catering students for his pubs and restaurants after a Gala Dinner to celebrate the official opening of the department.

The students, under Nigel Haworth’s leadership, spent two days preparing the four course meal which he put forward in the BBCs Great British Menu show for the Gala on Thursday.

The catering section includes three kitchens, a bistro and Farringtons restaurant.

Judith Watson said: “This year we have had an increase in the numbers of students who have taken on catering on a full time basis.

“The hospitality and catering is still a gowing industry and there are jobs available.

“Moving onto a single site this has enabled students to gain a whole college experience. Students can mix with A-level students and those on other courses, where it was difficult before.

“Nelson and Colne College has a long standing reputation for catering but we would like to formalise that as we have world class and specialist facilities.

“They have given a staff boost and in recruitment.”

Christine Farrington, section leader, said: “The students surpassed themselves. Nigel Haworth gave 100 per cent commitment to the students. It has opened the eyes of students about the levels they can achieve and gives them choices.”
