MAJOR works will close an Edenfield road for eight days, with traffic diverted along other valley routes.

Part of the A680 Rochdale Road, the main route from Rawtenstall to Rochdale, will be shut at various times during the next four weeks while Lancashire County Council carries out resurfacing work.

The stretch from the junction with Market Street to the junction with Bury Old Road will be closed between 9am and 7pm from Tuesday until Friday next week, and on October 19 to 22 inclusive.

Traffic heading between Edenfield and Rochdale will be diverted through Rawtenstall, Bacup and Whitworth when the road is closed.

The work, which is costing county engineers £130,000, involves resurfacing a worn-out stretch of carriageway.

Householders and businesses along the route have been asked to avoid parking their vehicles along that stretch during operational hours.

Daniel Herbert, assistant area highways manager, Lancashire County Council, said: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused while resurfacing work is being carried out. By closing the road on certain days, the council can complete the work as soon as possible.

“We would ask drivers to allow extra time for their journeys on days when the road is temporarily shut. The closures will come into effect from 9am, to try to minimise any early morning disruption.”
