THE mother of a former Burnley schoolgirl has spoken of her horror at watching her daughter being ravaged by the effects of a legal party drug.

These shocking pictures show how former Habergham High School pupil, Mikaila Tyhurst, 22, lost her looks and health after becoming hooked on the party drug GBL (gamma butyrolactone).

Her mother, Tracey Tyhurst, has spoken of her nightmare after her daughter became addicted to the drug four years ago, after she is believed to have been spiked with the substance.

Mikaila, who has a four-year-old daughter and first started taking the drug when she was 18, had dreamed of becoming an airline stewardess.

Now she has lost her front teeth after a drug-induced fall, suffers from skin complaints, has only around 10 per cent of her liver left working, and nearly died of an overdose three months ago.

Mikaila, who now lives in Crumpsall in Manchester, moved away from Burnley when she was 15 but frequently came back to the borough to visit friends.

Tracey said: “Mikaila started rehab on Thursday and will be in for ten days in total, after that she will be in a dry house where she will be monitored for the next two years. The past few years have been a nightmare, she has been in and out of hospital dozens of times and would fall unconscious quite often.

“One time she was in hospital with cuts to her head and broken feet after falling unconscious, the doctors said it looked like she had been run over.

“She lost a lot of weight and went down to about six and a half stone a few months ago. She has also turned to alcohol and last time she was in hospital they said because of the effects of both the GBL and drinking she has only about 10 or 11 per cent of her liver left working.”

The Government has launched a £200,000 publicity campaign aimed at students to inform about the dangers of GBL.

The drug, which can be lethal in tiny doses if mixed with alcohol, is expected to be classified as a class C drug later this year.
