CALLANDS runner Rachel Hawkins has laced up her running shoes to train for the Bupa Great North Run in aid of breast cancer research.

The fashion designer decided to join Breast Cancer Campaign’s Jigsaw Runners team for the race in Newcastle this Sunday, September 20 after her grandmother and great auntie were diagnosed with breast cancer.

The 25-year-old of Hayscastle Close said: “Luckily my grandmother is in remission thanks to the fabulous treatment and aftercare she received but unfortunately my great auntie has been diagnosed for the second time and is currently being treated for it.

“It will be great to know that, by running in this race and raising money, I will be helping my great auntie and many others who have also been affected by this life-changing disease.

“I am grateful for the treatment my grandmother was able to receive and it is the reason she is still here today. It makes me feel proud to think I can also help make a difference.”
