THE number of people assessed for suspected swine flu has again fallen in the North West.

In the week to September 9, some 1,026 people were dealt with by the National Pandemic Flu Service in the region, down from 1,118 the week before.

Meanwhile, the number of people collecting anti-virals dropped from 582 to 522 in the same period.

Across North West hospitals, 27 people are being treated for swine flu, down six from the week before.

The majority of people who have had swine flu so far have described mild to moderate cold or flu-like symptoms, health bosses said.

A spokesman for NHS North West said: “Some of the symptoms are the sudden onset of fever, cough or shortness of breath.

“Other symptoms can include head-ache, sore throat, tiredness, aching muscles, chills, sneezing, runny nose or a loss of appetite.

“Anyone who thinks they may have contracted the swine flu virus can contact the National Pandemic Flu Service.”
