ARSONISTS have targeted another derelict Rossendale mill after a series of summer attacks.

Investigations are under way after two floors of the Rosebank Mill in Stubbins were set alight by yobs.

It follows incidents across the borough including one that saw Chris Farrow, a retained crew member from Bacup, suffering a broken back when he was part of a 30-man team attending to several highly explosive acetylene cylinders in Albert Mill off Market Street, Whitworth.

Watch manager Kevin Fyles, said: “There are so many dangers for youngsters and children who play in vacant mills.

“Open floors and fragile structures are always a worry, and if a small fire is started, it can spread rapidly.

“Some mills have oil covering the floor so if a flame is lit, it could be extremely dangerous.

“Due to the size and shape of these mills, it is very difficult for firefighters to locate young people.”

A buildings inspector monitored the site with firefighters yesterday.

The attack, late on Tuesday, is the latest in a series of arsons. Parked cars, static caravans and equipment at Ski Rossendale have also been set alight.

A spokesman for Lancashire fire and rescue said: “Though the investigation is in the early stages, it is looking likely it was started intentionally.”
