TRIBUTES have been paid to Burnley FC director Ray Griffiths, who has died aged 78.

Mr Griffiths, who had supported the Clarets for more than 50 years, became a director in 2005 after selling his business, Target Express Parcels.

Bosses at the club have paid tribute to their former colleague’s desire to see Burnley succeed.

Peter Pike, chairman of the Clarets Trust, said: “When he sold his business interests in 2005 and invested in the football club, he did so at a time when such investment was crucial to the future of the club.

"He also added his business expertise to the board.

“Burnley FC has been fortunate to have local dedicated Clarets fans willing to invest their money in the club.

"I am sure that this latter success for the club must have meant a lot to Ray who has been unfortunate to suffer poor health for the last year or so.”

A spokesperson from Burnley FC said: “Ray was a Burnley supporter for more than 50 years and a successful local businessman.

"Ray joined the board in January 2005 after buying a considerable amount of shares following the sale of his Target delivery company and everyone at Burnley Football Club would like to send their condolences to Ray’s family.”

Mr Griffiths sold Target Express Parcels to City Link, which now employs over 6,000 people.

Petar Cvetkovic, managing director of City Link, said: “We are saddened to hear of the death of Ray Griffiths.”
