AN appeal for help has been issued by a disabled riding group in Burnley as leaders celebrate a £10,000 award from the National Lottery.

Young riders with special needs will benefit from the lottery handout received by the Herd House club, based in Halifax Road, Briercliffe.

Herd House is launching a new scheme - Smiles, Therapy and Laughter - to enable more disabled riders to saddle up.

But the club is looking for extra assistance from able-bodied supporters to get the initiative off the ground.

Club chairman Catherine Billington said: “The project is aimed to benefit both the special needs riders and young people who will be learning to give assistance.

“Some riders may require support from up to three helpers, to assist with their balance or confidence.

“For the riders, not only does it improve their physical wellbeing, during the exercise, and in most cases helps with their general balance, but it also builds on their confidence, social skills and abillity to interact with other people, through the horse.”

Specialist saddles are required by the club, fitted with an additional handle, front and leg straps and thigh rolls.

Catherine added: “What we need now are applications from clubs or groups, from any background, who wish to join the scheme.

“We are looking for both riders and helpers, with priority being given to those who will gain the greatest benefits from their time with the scheme.”

People wanting to find out more about the Smiles, Laughter and Therapy project are asked to contact Catherine at RDA Group, Herd House Farm, Halifax Road, Briercliffe, Burnley, BB10 3QZ, before the end of July.

Alternatively clubs can contact Catherine directly on 01282 436981 or 0788 557 1220 to find out more information.
