AN allotment site in Darwen has been given a new name and logo thanks to two local schoolchildren.
A competition was run for all pupils at Ashleigh Primary School and St Peter’s Primary School to find a name and image for land off Rose Hill Street.
The area had been overgrown with weeds and brambles until local community worker Tracy Jones set about a 20-month campaign to transform it into allotments.
Nicole Yates, seven, from Ashleigh Primary, won the naming competition with her entry Roseberry Park.
Leon Bellusci, also seven, from St Peter’s, won the logo competition with a design featuring a circle, trees, sunshine and a blue sky.
The judges were Coun Phil Jones, community worker Tracy Jones, Michelle Tracy the head of St Peter’s and Lorraine Chatburn, who will be chair of the new allotment association.
Coun Jones said: “We had about 150 entries and it was surprsingly difficult to pick a winner. The level of entries has been very high.”
The new logo and name will now be sent to a graphic designer who will make a sign.
