BURNLEY MP Kitty Ussher has praised the town’s midwives after a visit.

Mrs Ussher called in at the Edith Watson Maternity Unit at Burnley General Hospital after midwives there won an award for promoting natural home and water births.

The unit won a National Childbirth Trust award, supported by the All Party Parliamentary Group on Maternity.

Mrs Ussher said: “I am pleased that the East Lancashire Hospitals Trust, which includes the Edith Watson Unit in Burnley where my two children were born, have been recognised for an award.

“This is a good sign as we move towards the creation of a new Centre of Excellence Maternity Unit opening at Burnley General Hospital.

“I would like to pass on my congratulations to the staff at Burnley General Hospital and their colleagues in other hospital in East Lancashire for working so hard for this award.”

Experts say home and water births are effective as the mother is more comfortable during labour.
