A Ribble Valley festival was followed by an evening of disorder which saw 20 arrests.

Police were called when drunken revellers caused chaos after the annual Longridge Field Day.

Organisers hailed the field day as a huge success once again, but the trouble will inevitably reflect on the event, the town’s deputy mayor said.

Coun Jim Rogerson said: “It is a shame this has happened on the evening of the field day, which was once again a cracking day. It will be the field day that gets the blame when it shouldn’t.

“Unfortunately it is just a minority that are spoiling things for everyone else.

“I’m not sure where the trouble makers are from but we are finding that a lot of youngsters from Preston are coming over at the weekend and causing problems in the town centre.”

Hundreds of families att-ended Saturday’s event, which included a procession through the streets.

The sunshine had brought revellers from across Lancashire to the town, but police said incidents of people being drunk and disorderly began after 7pm.

Residents complained of youths blocking streets and smashing bottles.

A police spokesman said all the people arrested were arrested for either drunk and disorderly or public order offences.

Bill Houghton, president of the Longridge Field Day committee, said the trouble was not connected to the field day.

He said: “The events in the day were a big success again. We had big crowds and everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves.

“We had finished and packed up by 5.30pm so I don’t think the field day was anything to do with any trouble in the evening.

“There were no problems at all with the events on the field or the procession through the town.”
