A BLACKBURN primary school is looking for sponsorship to compete in a global competition after being hailed British champions.

A group of seven Shadsworth Junior School year four pupils saw off competition from 32 school across the country to be named Destination ImagiNation British Champions 2009 in the elementary section.

To enable the children and two teachers to fly to America, in May, they need to raise £9,000.

Daisyfield Primary School, Blackburn, which came second at the competition in Walsall in the West Midlands, is also looking for sponsorship.

Destination ImagiNation is a community-based organisation which aims to teach children and young people critical and creative thinking skills.

It holds annual competitions which are open to all schools.

The elementary section has two sections, an instant challenge where the children must solve a problem on the spot and a performance.

This year the pupils rapped and beat boxed to Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

Daisyfield Primary School, which has won in previous years, came second with a rendition of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Martin Airey, a year four teacher at Shadsworth Primary School, said: “This is the first time we have won the national event.”
