AN operation to disperse large crowds of teenagers is off to a successful start.

Police pledged to prevent anti-social behaviour in Oswaldtwistle’s Union Road area, after receiving reports of up to 70 youths causing terror.

Following reports of abuse, anti-social behaviour and vandalism, a dispersal order was granted giving police powers to prevent groups congregating.

Newly released figures show the first weekend of the order saw 51 people dispersed which included 18 females and 33 males on Friday.

The following night, 13 people were dispersed.

The figures show a 75% reduction in disorder night on night.

Reports of anti-social behaviour in the area were also down from between eight and 12 per weekend to zero.

Neighbourhood Sergeant Graham Brownsmith said: “This is a good positive start which we hope continues.

"The fair in Accrington may have been a contributing factor, so we will continue to monitor the situation to ensure the peace is maintained.”
