DRINKERS at a popular Burnley pub were told it was closing after an advertising board was left outside.

Regulars at the Waggoners Inn, in Manchester Road, turned up to find a message from the landlords, named only as Linda, Jeremy and Laura.

It claimed the pub, which specialises in food, had been forced to close because “one person has destroyed a very special community”, leaving the staff “absolutely devastated”.

The board said: “Linda, Jeremy and Laura and all the staff at the Waggoners are very sad to announce that due to unforseen circumstances beyond our control the pub has ceased trading.

“We apologise to all our customers for any inconvenience and thank you for all your support and custom over the past seven years.”

The closure of the pub, which was popular despite being relatively isolated, has left many surprised and baffled.

Helen Vanrose, 38, who lives in Manchester Road, said: “We used to go in there all the time so this has come as a bit of a shock.

“It was a really good country pub which got a lot of regular trade and was always busy.

“It was one for food, not a drinking pub, so it is a real shame it’s closed.”

Burnley Council leader Gordon Birtwistle, whose ward covers the Waggoners, said the pub was “one of the best in Burnley”.

He added: “It was always very busy and they used to do very good food.

"I went many times and it was a really friendly place, so I hope it reopens soon.”

No one from the Waggoners was available for comment.
