A CRUNCH meeting has been arranged so campaigners can demand answers on Rossendale’s regeneration.

Members of the borough’s civic trust will meet on Friday in Rawtenstall to try to set out a “clear vision” for the future.

Among the items on the agenda will be the town’s long-awaited new bus station and a new public square in Bacup, both of which have yet to be built.

County council bosses have promised movement on the bus station this year but a design for the new square has yet to be unveiled.

Now civic trust members have had enough - and want the public to help them draw up a plan of action.

Kathy Fishwick, Rossendale Civic Trust’s planning secretary, said: “Everyone is welcome to this meeting which will hopefully allow us to influence Rossendale developments in the future.

“As far as we are concerned, Rossendale is at a crossroads and the borough needs a vision.

“Lancashire County Council has promised us a new bus station for donkeys years but it has yet to be built and they need some public opinion on it.

“Meanwhile, there’s also a new square planned for Bacup under the Pennine Lancashire Squared scheme but we don’t know what’s happening there.”

Mrs Fishwick said the meeting could lead members of the trust to demand showdown talks with council chiefs over future regeneration plans.

Lancashire County Council said plans for the new Rawtenstall bus station were currently being drawn up and would soon be put out to public consultation.

The winning design for the new Bacup public square in the Pennine Lancashire Squared competition is due to be announced later this year.

The civic trust meeting is at the Weavers’ Cottage, in Bacup Road, Rawtenstall, from 7pm on Friday.
