UP to 100 youngsters have been “running rampage” at a popular Darwen park causing damage and intimidating walkers.

Harry Duxbury, chairman of the Friends of Bold Venture Park, said problems were so bad at the site that people were put off from visiting.

Currently the new £145,000 play area, which opened at the beginning of the month is closed after vandals damaged a roundabout.

The item has been removed from the play area while repairs are made.

Mr Duxbury said: “We have had a lot of problems in the park, particularly on Friday nights.

“Lately there have been 100 kids running rampage through the area.

“There has always been a problem but it seems worse than ever. At our monthly meetings the issue is always raised, sometimes it seems that is all we talk about.”

He said that issues of vandalism, people congregating in large groups and intimidation had been reported.

The roundabout was damaged by youngsters burning rope supports that held it in place, he said.

There have also been complaints about drinking and smoking and of associated litter problems.

Mr Duxbury added: “I have no idea what can be done but there is a big problem. It is really putting people off enjoying the park in peace.”

The park, which has been a public area since 1889, was originally an area of cloughs and quarries.

Work is currently taking place to improve parts of the park after a recent bid for “green flag” status was refused.

An improved walkway to the play area is planned.

Officers at Darwen police station said that there had been a number of calls regarding Bold Venture Park in recent weeks.
