MORE than 20 jobs are set to go at a Pendle company as a result of the economic recession.

Silentnight Beds, which employs around 900 staff at its Barnoldswick base, Long Ing Lane, announced the 22 redundancies yesterday.

According to the company, the UK’s leading bed manufacturer, the effected employees are from the site’s factory.

The company makes beds, mattresses, headboards, toys, sofa beds, bedding and cots.

Amanda Jones, marketing director, said: “The market is very quiet at the moment.

"The order book is a lot quieter than it would be normally at this time of year.

“Beds are high ticket items. If a washing machine breaks it has to be fixed, but with a bed people can defer the payment and they do.

“We tried not to do it and hoped things would change, but in the end we had to act.

“There comes a point when you have to take action and do something.”

Last June, bosses had warned redundancies may have to be made as people were being more prudent due to the credit crunch.

Along with Rolls Royce, it is a major source of employment in the town and the rest of Pendle.
