A 23-year-old man jumped off a motorway bridge in Burnley, police said.
He suffered a broken ankle and pelvis in the plunge on Saturday night.
At about 7.30pm several members of the public travelling through junction 10 of the M65 at Burnley called the police after seeing a man standing on the wrong side of safety barriers on a bridge above the motorway.
As the emergency services arrived at the scene, the man jumped off the bridge and landed on the westbound carriageway of the motorway below, police said.
The motorway was closed for about 10 minutes while the man was treated at the scene and then taken by ambulance to the Royal Blackburn Hospital where he is now recovering.
