AN up and coming band has used the tragic story of Sophie Lancaster to inspire a new single which targets Britain’s ‘unsafe streets’.

The Razorbax will release their new track ‘Society Breakdown’ next month to highlight the violent crime problems across the UK.

Sophie, 20, was murdered in Stubbylee Park, Bacup, after being kicked and stamped in the head as she tried to protect her boyfriend, during a gang attack in August 2007.

The couple was targeted because of their Goth-style clothing and image.

Band manager, Ian St Peters, said: “The brutal attack on Sophie Lancaster was among a number of tragic deaths which upset the four members of the band.

And that is why they sat down and wrote ‘Society Breakdown’.

Ian St Peters added: “The track is a hard-hitting song with stunningly incisive lyrics and a simple message – the kilings must stop.”

The band’s song contains lyrics dedicated to the memory of Sophie as well as other young people who have recently been killed, including 11-year-old Rhys Jones in Liverpool and Ben Kinsella in London.

The lyrics say: “A young couple battered for wearing black, “How many more have got to die, how many more left asking why?”

Lead Singer Leigh Bucknall said he was concerned that British people had become desensitised to hate crimes due to the amount of incidents in 2008.

He is hoping the track will inspire people to stand against hate crimes.

“The trial of Sophie’s attackers really affected me,” he added.

“It reminded us of her tragic death.

“So we decided that we had to do something to express our views in a song.”

The band will also use a picture of Sophie Lancaster in the music video and on the front cover of their CD.

‘Society Breakdown’ will be released on February 2.
