A 15-year-old Preston girl who hanged herself was nearly three times over the drink-drive limit, an inquest has heard.

Jenna Darnley hanged herself several months after taking an overdose and cutting her wrists, Preston Coroner’s Court heard on Tuesday.

Her mother Angela Darnley, 42, saw her daughter alive for the last time when she was chatting on the phone to a friend in her bedroom at their home in Grimsargh, about 11.15pm on May 1.

She said Jenna was excited because she had booked a trip to Majorca for them only hours earlier.

Mrs Darnley said she woke with a “blinding headache” at about 3.30am and went to get some water, when she noticed Jenna was not in bed and went downstairs.

"She went into the back garden after finding the patio door blinds open.

Mrs Darnley said: “I didn’t realise what I was seeing at the time. I just saw something white.

"Then I realised it was Jenna. I thought she was leant over being sick but she was still.

”She was slumped over... she was leant over the chairs.

"As I walked towards her, I think I said ‘Jenna’ and then I realised what had happened.”

She said she found a belt tied around her daughter’s neck and loosened it and laid her on the ground before going to get help.

Mrs Darnley said her daughter had no problems in the days and weeks leading up to her death, apart from a fight a fortnight earlier.

Dr Helen Stringfellow, who carried out the post-mortem examination, said Jenna was nearly three times over the legal drink-drive limit.

Jenna had been drinking with friends in Preston, without her mother’s knowledge, on the day she died.

PC Irene Wright, coroner’s officer, said Jenna sent a final text to an ex-boyfriend and that she seemed to be “a bit upset” that he would only speak to her by text message.

PC Wright said: “This was a girl who had everything to live for.

"She was happy, she had had a number of issues at school but she dealt with that.”

Assistant deputy coroner Howard McCann recorded a verdict of accidental death.
