ROADS and footpaths in Burnley - including a crime-hit route - will benefit from a £500,000 highways windfall from Lancashire County Council.

Borough and county councillors will meet next Monday, when they are expected to rubberstamp an extensive array of carriageway and pavement upgrades across the area.

Top of the list is a £40,000 contribution towards improved street lighting for Lyndhurst Road, backed up by CCTV camera coverage.

Police have investigated a racist attack on a taxi driver in the street earlier this year and there have been previous difficulties with anti-social behaviour.

Town centre streets which take a regular hammering from buses will also benefit from two major resurfacing programmes.

Croft Street, from St James Street to Red Lion Street, beside the bus station, and Red Lion Street itself, from Parker Lane to Centenary Way, are scheduled for improvements totalling £80,000.

The A680 Manchester Road, between St Matthew Street and Springfield Road, is another key beneficiary, with a new £80,000 top being laid there soon.

Close by, Reynolds Street in Rosehill will see both the road and footpaths rebuilt, in a £95,000 project.

Rural Cliviger will see footpath upgrades to part of Red Lees Road, costing £20,000, and neigbouring Worsthorne will see two similar schemes, with a £50,000 price tag, to revamp Ravenoak Lane, from Church Square onwards, and Wallhurst Close.

And Helm Close in Habergham Eaves has also been pencilled in for pavement resurfacing.

Other road relaying schemes cover Carholme Avenue and Queen Victoria Road, with pavement regeneration earmarked for Carlton Road, Langwyth Road and Windermere Avenue.

County council highways official Brian Cook said: “The majority of these schemes have already been the subject of reports to the Lancashire Local this year in respect of the highways capital special maintenance programme and the annual highways funding allocation.

“As such they are already known to be priorities locally but to date have had insufficient priority for funding this year.”

The Lancashire Local Burnley meets at the town hall in Manchester Road on Monday from 7pm.
