AN investigation is set to take place into why a community centre – opened by the Bishop of Salford just eight years ago – is now closed.

The £600,000 Waterbridge Resource Centre was opened on the site of the former Sacred Heart School in Rigby Street, Colne, in November 2000.

But the centre, which was set up with funding from Pendle Council and Pendle Partnership closed recently. Now Coun Tony Greaves has drawn up plans for a sub-committee to examine why the venture failed – and to see if any lessons can be learned from the centre’s demise.

Coun Greaves said: “It seems to me we should carry out a scrutiny investigation to learn about the issues here and try and ensure that it does not happen again.”

The fact that such a much-needed facility, which set up to serve Vivary Bridge and Waterside wards, had failed, was a matter of concern, he added.

The five-strong committee will carry out its probe during the summer holidays.

The centre once housed an employment project, Colne Community Enterprise, including a food co-op, an exchange trading scheme and printing service.
