A MAN who had been drinking at the home of a 58-year-old woman stole cash and a bank card from her purse when she fell asleep.

Blackburn magistrates heard that Russell Edward Smith then used the card to “buy” an internet chatroom site for £348.

Smith, 22, of Burnley Road, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to stealing an Abbey cash card and £8 and stealing £348 belonging to the Abbey Bank. He was ordered to do 150 hours unpaid work and pay £60 costs.

Claire Grant. prosecuting, said in the past Smith had done odd jobs for the woman. He went to her house and told her a story about having fallen out with his girlfriend and she invited him in for a drink.

“When the lady fell asleep he stole her bank card and a small amount of cash before leaving,” said Mrs Grant.

She said as soon as the victim realised what had happened she went to see her client.

The card was returned and his father paid back the £8.
