SCOOTER fanatics are set to abandon their rides and push a car between two towns to raise money for a paralysed teenager.

Members of Darwen's Pogue Mahone Scooter Club plan to make the four-and-a-half-mile journey from Blackburn train station to Darwen town centre to collect cash for student Chloe Holgate.

Teams of four will take turns pushing the 1,200kg a metallic blue Renault Megane, while those taking a breather will carry collection buckets.

Chloe, 17, of Newchurch-in-Pendle, suffered spinal injuries and became paralysed after she fell backwards off a bridge in Higherford in September 2007.

She has lost all mobility from her chest down, is now only able to move her arms, shoulders and thumbs. The teen now requires a specialised electric wheelchair and her family are having to spend thousands of pounds carrying out vital adaptions to their home.

Chloe's uncle, David Hall, is a member of the Darwen Scooter Club and the group are determined to raise the £4,500 needed for the wheelchair.

They will set off from the train station at 9.30am on Saturday - an early start to avoid any traffic disruption.

Mr Hall, 42, said: "It is going to get quite tough when we get to Cravens Brow but we are all quite fit.

"Until something like this happens to someone close to you, you aren't aware of the changes you will have to make to your daily life.

"Chloe's accident has had a massive effect on all of her family and we want to do everything we can to help."

Martin Evans, 41, of Scootlife, based at Darwen Enterprise Centre, added: "We are hoping to get a good deal of support along the route and we have already collected sponsorship money in advance.

"It is going to be quite testing but it is for a very good cause.

"When we pass Ewood we will have to have the brake on, Hollins Grove is up hill and then it flattens out as we get nearer to Darwen town centre.

"With a good run we should get to the finish around the three-hour mark."
