ONE person has died and another is in a critical condition after a four-vehicle crash which closed a motorway for almost seven hours.

The M6 was closed northbound between junction 32 at Broughton and 33 at Galgate until 8am this morning following the accident causing traffic chaos in the area.

Police initially reported that two people died in the accident.

But latest reports state that a female Ford Escort driver died at the scene and a passenger was seriously injured.

The driver of a Vauxhall Astra also suffered serious injuries and may lose both arms.

The crash happened near junction 32 at around 1.10am. It involved a lorry, a van and two cars.

The lorry driver and the driver of a Mercedes Sprinter van suffered minor injuries.

Queues were reported all the way back to junction 31a at Samlesbury.

The M55 was also closed at its junction with the M6 and the southbound A6 was also closed at Garstang at around 7am following another accident.
