An architect has been appointed chairman of the Burnley Civic Trust.

Nixie Edwards, co-founder of Burnley-based architectural practice HAD & Co, will lead the trust as it enters a new era of heritage stewardship and forward-looking design.

Established in 1964, Burnley Civic Trust has long served as both a protector of the town’s heritage and a promoter of its architectural ambitions.

Ms Edwards said: "To lead an institution with such a proud legacy of protecting Burnley’s heritage is an incredible honour.

"The built environment is shifting, and our heritage must not just be preserved, it must inspire the future.

"I look forward to working alongside our dedicated committee and the wider community to ensure Burnley remains a vibrant, architecturally ambitious, and deeply historic town where past excellence meets future innovation."

Ms Edwards’ election is seen as a step forward, combining her expertise with a commitment to safeguarding Burnley’s cultural identity.

A spokesperson for the Burnley Civic Trust said: "Founded by Nixie Edwards and Saira Hussain, female-led architectural practice HAD & Co has rapidly redefined the architectural landscape of Burnley and beyond, building a formidable reputation for delivering bold, high-end modern design, complex transformations, and master planning.

"As a prominent female leader in architecture, Edwards has spent her career breaking barriers and reshaping spaces. Her appointment is a significant victory for representation in the built environment, bringing a fresh, dynamic perspective to the stewardship of Burnley’s public realms, historic structures, and future landscapes."
