A number of remembrance services and parades will be held across Hyndburn next week to mark Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day and commemorate those who gave everything to their country.

Events are due to take place in Accrington, Altham, Church, Clayton-le-Moors, Great Harwood, Huncoat, Oswaldtwistle and Rishton, with services, wreath-laying ceremonies and parades planned.

Hyndburn Council has confirmed that the previously advertised Remembrance Sunday service in Baxenden will no longer take place.

Instead, a service will be held at St John's Church at 3.30pm on Armistice Day, Wednesday, November 11.

A separate Armistice Day service is due to take place at the Accrington Pals Memorial Garden on Church Street from 10.45am.

Mayor of Hyndburn Cllr Noordad Aziz said: "It will be my great honour to attend the Remembrance Sunday service in Great Harwood this year and I look forward to honouring our brave servicemen and women alongside my fellow residents.

"Earlier this year, I was able to go and pay my respects at the Somme, and it highlighted the ultimate sacrifice that was made for our freedom.

"There is no way we can ever truly repay them, but we can begin by gathering as a community to honour them and the values they gave their lives for.

"Services are taking place across the borough, and I encourage all residents to attend their local service to pay their respects."

Accrington

Transport will be provided from Accrington Bus Station from 10am to take members of the public and marching organisations to the cenotaph at Oak Hill Park.

A service will begin at the cenotaph at 10.45am. Following the service and wreath-laying, marching organisations and those wishing to join the parade will form up at the main entrance to the park on Manchester Road.

The parade will set off at 11.30am and make its way to the Church Street War Memorial via Abbey Street and Blackburn Road, where a brief service will take place before the parade is dismissed.

An Armistice Day service will also be held at the Accrington Pals Memorial Garden on Church Street at 10.45am on Wednesday, November 11, ahead of the national two-minute silence.

Altham

A service will begin at St James' Church at 10am and will be followed by an Act of Remembrance at the village war memorial.

Baxenden

The Remembrance Sunday service previously scheduled to take place in Baxenden has been cancelled.

Instead, a service will be held at St John's Church at 3.30pm on Armistice Day, Wednesday, November 11.

A remembrance service will take place at the war memorial in Gatty Park at 11am.

Refreshments will be available to purchase afterwards at Elmfield Hall.

Clayton-le-Moors

Participants will assemble at the Arthur Wilson Centre on Pickup Street at 9.30am before a procession leaves at 9.40am.

The procession will travel via Barnes Square and Church Street before a service begins at All Saints' Church at 10am.

Great Harwood

Those taking part will assemble at Town Gate at 10.20am before a parade leaves at 10.35am.

The parade will travel via Church Street and Church Lane to the war memorial, where a service and wreath-laying ceremony will begin at 10.55am, including the national silence at 11am.

Following the service, the parade will return to Town Gate for dismissal. Church services will also be held from 9.45am.

A wreath-laying ceremony will begin at 2.30pm.

Oswaldtwistle

Participants will assemble on Thwaites Street at 2pm before a parade leaves at 2.10pm for the war memorial on Rhyddings Street.

A combined remembrance service and wreath-laying ceremony will begin at 2.30pm.

Hot drinks will be available to purchase at Oswaldtwistle Social Club after the service.

Rishton

A service will take place at St Peter and St Paul's Church from 10am.

At 10.40am, a parade will leave the church and proceed along Blackburn Road to the war memorial for a short service and wreath-laying ceremony before returning to the church for dismissal.

Temporary road closures will be in place in Accrington, Oswaldtwistle, Great Harwood, Rishton and Clayton-le-Moors while services and parades take place.

Additional closures will also be in force around Church Street in Accrington on Armistice Day between 10.30am and 11.30am.

Hyndburn Council's Armed Forces Champion, Cllr Stewart Eaves, said: "Our community comes together every year to honour our fallen heroes, in conflicts both past and present, on Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day.

"It is an opportunity for us to pay our respects and thank them for their service, without which we wouldn't enjoy the freedoms we take for granted today.

"Services will be taking place across the borough, and I would encourage all Hyndburn residents to attend and show their support."
