A man assaulted two security officers as they removed him from a court room where he had been having a row with a judge.

Blackburn magistrates heard Hong Xu struck one of the security guards in the face and in the struggle the other one suffered a cut to his hand.

Xu, 61, of Church Terrace, Darwen, was convicted after a trial of two charges of assault.

He was made subject to a conditional discharge for 12 months and ordered to pay £75 compensation to one of the victims, £50 to the other, £300 costs and £26 victim surcharge.

Graeme Tindall, prosecuting, was appearing in the County Court at the Burnley Combined Courts in Hammerton Street on October 30, 2025.

"Security were called by the judge because he was having an argument with the defendant," said Mr Tindall.

"He was told by the security officers that he had to leave the courtroom, but he refused.

"They took hold of him on either side under the armpits in order to remove him, but he resisted and struck one of them in the face.

"He was placed in a bear hug by the other officer who sustained a small cut to his hand during the incident."

Ian Huggan, mitigating, said his client, who was assisted by a Mandarin Chinese interpreter, did not have an interpreter at the County Court.

"He maintains his denial of the allegations, but he has been found guilty," said Mr Huggan.

He said his client had been in the UK for nine years following difficulties in China where he said he had been poisoned and had been spied on by the authorities.

"He was working in engineering in China but has not worked since he came to the UK," said Mr Huggan.
