A man who raped and abused a woman over a sustained period of time has been jailed for more than a decade.
Zain-Ul-Abideen Hussain, 20, of HMP Altcourse, and previously of Poulhan Street, Bolton, appeared before Burnley Crown Court to be sentenced on one count of assault by penetration, one count of rape, one count of controlling and coercive behaviour, one count of common assault and two counts of intentional strangulation.
The offences took place in Darwen.
A victim impact statement said: “I had suffered from physical and sexual abuse, and he would say that no one would believe me, and if they do, the most he would get is a slap on the wrist.
“He believed he was untouchable and could do what he wanted, especially towards me.
“I was struggling with the violence and the sexual abuse, and I never knew if he was going to snap at me or be violent.
“It became common for the physical violence, and this is when he would snap. For a prolonged period of time, this would play on my mind.
“I had severe anxiety which was caused by Zain, and I walked on constant eggshells, and it would make me very paranoid as he lied and did the opposite of what he said all the time.
“I would have nightmares about the violence and abuse, and I was suffering exactly what was happening in real life.
“I was living in a state of not feeling safe, with all of this and the confusion of his broken promises, and I thought that the only way it would stop was if one of us died. The abuse was so frequent that it was the only way out I could see.”
She added that all of the abuse led to her wanting to take her own life, but Hussain prevented this.
The statement added: “When I was about to go through with it, he even took it away from me.
"I thought he was enjoying it, and he said he would torture me for the rest of my life."
Tim Evans, mitigating, outlined that whilst his client's offending was “appalling”, he said that there are more serious instances of coercion than that which were visible in this case.
He added Hussain had made plans to educate himself as an engineer and was proficient in martial arts.

Mr Evans said: “He had the self-discipline to become proficient in martial arts.
“However, that self-discipline has failed him, and clearly there is a problem with anger and aggression, and it would come out quite suddenly.
“He worked to gain those belts; he had worked in school and outside of school, but because of his behaviour, he has effectively thrown that away.
“In custody, he is endeavouring to take steps that he can demonstrate to use his time positively as he can.”
Hussain was jailed for 10 years and 10 months.
