Motorists in Lancaster were given an unexpected surprise when an emu took to the road during Monday afternoon’s rush hour (October 26).

The large flightless bird was spotted running along Ashton Road, near Lancaster Golf Club, at around 3.43pm.

Footage shared on social media by Pat Matthews shows the emu walking alongside slow-moving traffic, even peering into the windows of passing cars as drivers carefully made their way past.

Sharing the video online, Pat said: “It’s not often you go head to head with an emu.

"Hope he got home safely.”

The unusual sight caused traffic disruption in the area, with Lancashire Police confirming they had received a call about the roaming bird.

A spokesperson for the force said: “The call came to us at 3.43pm and it caused some traffic disruption in the area.

"The emu was safely recovered at 4.16pm.”
