Train passengers are being warned to check before travelling as Storm Austen and Storm Boelo are expected to disrupt services.

Northern has announced changes to services across its network until Monday (October 26) with a number of routes through Greater Manchester set to run fewer trains than normal.

From Saturday (October 24) there will be a reduction in trains between Manchester Piccadilly and Alderley Edge, Rose Hill Marple and Buxton.

The Blackburn to Rochdale service via Bolton and Manchester Victoria will also run less frequently, along with services between Leeds and Manchester Victoria.

Passengers travelling to and from Manchester Airport could also be affected.

From 7pm on Saturday, Northern says the Blackpool North to Manchester Airport route will operate at one train per hour in each direction.

Changes were introduced on Friday (October 23), including fewer trains on the Blackburn to Rochdale route via Bolton and Manchester Victoria.

Northern said the alterations were being made as strong winds can bring trees, branches and other debris onto the railway, affecting services and making journeys less reliable than usual.

The operator is advising passengers to check their journeys before setting off and allow extra time, warning that some services could be amended or changed at short notice.

Journey planners are being updated but Northern said they may not immediately reflect all of the alterations, meaning passengers are advised to check again immediately before travelling.

Disruption is also expected elsewhere across Northern's network.

Some trains will make fewer station calls on routes including Blackburn to Headbolt Lane and York to Blackpool North, while reductions are also planned on a number of services in Yorkshire, Lancashire and the North East.

On the Cumbrian Coast, the line between Carlisle and Whitehaven is due to close from 9pm on Saturday because of high winds, with Northern saying trains will not run and replacement buses will not be provided after that time.

Northern will continue to monitor conditions throughout the storms and keep passengers updated to help them plan their journeys.

Customers have also been encouraged to travel earlier where possible, allow extra time and take extra care around stations and platforms.

Passengers whose train is delayed by 15 minutes or more can make a claim through Northern's Delay Repay scheme.
