Police have issued some clarification after social media reports of 'armed police' on a street in Darwen this morning (October 22).

Social media users questioned if armed police were in Birch Hall Avenue.

Police have confirmed that an armed response vehicle  (ARV), a vehicle transporting authorised firearms officers and a range of lethal and non-lethal weapons, was present in Blackburn Road but was not deployed for a firearms incident.

The vehicle was the nearest available unit in the area during the arrest of a driver on Blackburn Road.

The driver was arrested for failing to appear in court, according to police.

A police spokesperson said: "It was the arrest of the driver for failing to appear in court.

"It happened at around 11.10am in Blackburn Road, Darwen."
