Free parking for Blue Badge holders in Lancaster City Council car parks will remain in place following an overwhelming response to a public consultation.

More than 1,870 people have taken part in the consultation so far, with around 74 per cent backing the retention of the current arrangements.

The council has now confirmed Blue Badge holders will continue to be able to park free of charge and without a time limit in all Lancaster City Council pay-and-display car parks.

The decision comes after strong public feedback in support of maintaining the scheme, which the council says is more generous than those offered in neighbouring districts.

Cllr Abi Mills, Lancaster City Council's Disability Champion, welcomed the outcome.

She said: "I am so relieved that our disabled residents have been heard loud and clear, and that the free parking will remain for Blue Badge holders.

"This will be a huge relief to a large number of people, and I thank those involved in the consultation for listening to our communities."

Cllr Peter Jackson, cabinet member with responsibility for Lancaster regeneration, said the response had made residents' views clear.

He said: "The response to the consultation has been overwhelming and we've heard very clearly that people value the existing arrangements, which are more generous than those offered in neighbouring districts, and want them to remain."

The council said the current arrangements will remain unchanged, ensuring Blue Badge holders can continue to park in its pay-and-display car parks without charge or time restrictions.
