Emergency services have closed a section of the M6 after a crash which had caused a fire.

The M6 in Greater Manchester is closed northbound between J23 (Newton Le Willows) and J24 (Ashton In Makerfield) and diversions are in place.

Emergency services including North West Motorway Police Group are in attendance. National Highways Traffic Officers are also on scene to assist with traffic management.

Diversion Route

  • Leave the M6 at J23 and at the roundabout take the 2nd exit onto the A580 heading west.
  • Follow the A580 to the A580/A58 junction and turn right onto the A58 eastbound.
  • Continue on the A58 eastbound back to the M6 J24 and rejoin the M6 northbound at J24 to continue your journey.

A spokesman for National Highways said: “If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.

“Further information is available from National Highways by visiting our website, travel apps, or via our regional twitter feed. Our 24/7 contact centre team is also available to provide up to the minute information on 0300 123 5000.”
