A busy Blackburn road was closed after emergency crews were called to a house fire.

The blaze broke out while the occupant was inside, before a neighbour spotted smoke billowing from the property and raised the alarm.

Four fire engines were called to the property on the corner of Redlam and Rutland Street earlier this evening, and the blaze was brought under control.

There was still a strong smell of smoke in the area just after 8pm.

A man who lives nearby and alerted the occupant said: “I could smell some smoke. I thought it might be a bonfire.

“I managed to alert him before things got worse.

“I am glad everyone is okay.

“We all look out for each other round here.”

Emergency teams remained at the scene to make the area safe. Traffic was being turned around on the road that links Witton to Bank Top and King Street.
