A man who surrendered himself at the police station ended up being kept in custody for more than 24 hours and being taken on a prison bus tour of Lancashire.

Blackburn Magistrates' Court heard Usman Khan had originally been arrested for being in possession of a small amount of cannabis.

Khan, 26, of Thorn Street, Burnley, pleaded guilty to that offence.

He was fined £166, with £85 costs and a £66 victim surcharge.

David Leach, mitigating, said when his client realised he had missed his original court date, he handed himself in to the police.

“That was at 9am yesterday,” said Mr Leach, during the hearing on Tuesday, October 6.

“Because Greenbank police station is closed, he was taken by prison bus to Lancaster police station.

"Later in the day he was back on the bus to Preston police station, which is where he spent the night.”

Mr Leach said when the car his client was a passenger in was stopped by police, he handed over the small amount of cannabis he had in his possession.

“He says he doesn’t drink alcohol but uses a little cannabis on a regular basis,” said Mr Leach.
