A disqualified driver panicked and got behind the wheel following a call to say his ex-partner and his child had been involved in a crash.

Blackburn Magistrates' Court heard Ben Murphy was stopped by police because of the speed he was travelling at on his way to the coast.

Murphy, 33, of Waterloo Close, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified and without insurance.

He was made subject to a community order with a requirement to work with the probation service.

He was banned from driving for a further 13 months, fined £120 and ordered to pay a £114 victim surcharge.

Elisa Kukla, prosecuting, said Murphy had been disqualified under the totting up procedure in November and was stopped in Bog Height Road on January 30.

Karl Benson, in mitigation, said on the day of the incident Murphy had received a phone call from his ex-partner to say she and their 18-month-old child had been involved in a serious road traffic collision.

"He panicked and moved heaven and earth to get there as quickly as possible," said Mr Benson.

"He realises now he didn't have to borrow a car to get to Lytham; there were other ways he could have achieved it. Thankfully, the child and his ex-partner were fine."
