Shoppers have been warned not to eat three Marks & Spencer products contaminated with Salmonella.

Manufacturer Greencore is recalling the salads and dip because the bug was detected in pistachio nuts used as an ingredient.

The Food Standards Agency issued an alert confirming that point-of-sale recall notices are now displayed in stores across the country.

Which products are affected?

The three affected Marks & Spencer items include M&S Super Nutty Wholefood with a Soy & Ginger Dressing in a 200g pack, with product code 00797016 and use by dates up to October 10.

Customers should also check for M&S Nutrient Dense Nutty Super Wholefood in a 285g pack, with product code 00961035 and use by dates up to October 11.

The third item is M&S Fresh Collection Pistachio Pesto in a 115g pot, carrying product code 29526743 and use by dates up to October 13.

The wider recall also involves two Pinch brand ready meals manufactured by Greencore and sold exclusively at Tesco.

These are the 400g Pinch Pan Poppin' Chicken Pasanda & Nutty Pilau Rice, with barcode 5051873005819, and the 400g Pinch Bangin' Butter Chicken & Nutty Pilau Rice, with barcode 5051873005796, both with use by dates up to October 10.

Salmonella health risks

Salmonella symptoms typically include fever, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps.

Anyone who becomes infected is advised to stay away from work, school or nursery for at least 48 hours after symptoms cease to prevent spreading the illness.

What Marks & Spencer said

Marks & Spencer issued a statement addressing the recall: "Please do not consume this product. Any customers in possession of these products can return it to their nearest store where a full refund will be given.

"Only the displayed date codes are impacted. No other M&S products are affected.

"We apologise to our customers for any inconvenience caused. For more information contact us on 03330148555."

What is a product recall?

When a problem is found with a food product, it may be withdrawn from shelves or recalled from consumers.

A withdrawal takes place when goods are taken off shop shelves, while a recall asks customers to return the item.

The Food Standards Agency issues Product Recall Information Notices to let consumers and local authorities know about specific problems associated with food.

In some cases, a Food Alert for Action is issued, providing local authorities with details of specific action to be taken on behalf of consumers.
