Police have carried out speed checks and drug searches in Burnley as part of a rural road safety operation.

The Rural Task Force focused on Red Lees Road and Brownhill Road following community concerns about speeding in residential and rural areas.

Officers checked 77 vehicles during the operation and found no drivers exceeding the speed limit.

The Rural Task Force said: "We then continued to conduct proactive patrol in the surrounding rural areas where we stopped multiple vehicles and searched four individuals under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

"Again, I know that conducting speed enforcement can be seen as a contentious issue for some.

"However, not only is this one of the most regularly reported community concerns from public surveys, but it is also a huge contributor to road traffic collisions that can result in death and series injury.

"We will therefore continue to conduct these check sites where we will check for excess speed, unroadworthy vehicle condition and for drink/drug driving – none of which should be tolerated.

"We will continue to do our best to make rural areas safer by proactive patrolling and responding to information received."
