A man accused of attempting to murder his great-grandfather has pleaded guilty to an alternative charge of wounding.

Kyle Newton, 22, of Whitegate Gardens, Padiham, appeared at Preston Crown Court on Tuesday (October 6) where he entered a guilty plea to section 18 - wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Newton is charged with attempted murder following an alleged incident in Wordsworth Avenue, Padiham, on Sunday, May 3.

The prosecution indicated that the plea was not currently acceptable.

They have been given until October 22 to decide if they wish to proceed to trial on the attempted murder charge or accept Newton's wounding plea.

Newton will remain in custody until that hearing.

At a previous hearing at Blackburn Magistrates' Court, the court heard the alleged victim suffered three stab wounds to his chest and was in a critical condition in hospital.
