The closure of the scenic road through the Forest of Bowland has been extended by three weeks after engineers encountered unforeseen ground conditions during major repair works.
Lancashire County Council had originally planned for the closure of Trough Road, at Sykes Farm, near Dunsop Bridge, to remain in place until October 9 while a collapsed retaining wall was rebuilt.
However, the authority has now confirmed that the closure will continue until October 30 to allow the works to be completed safely.
The repairs began on September 1 after part of a retaining wall collapsed.
The project involves reconstructing the damaged section of wall, with the aim of restoring the road and allowing the highway to reopen fully.
In an update, Lancashire County Council said unforeseen ground conditions had delayed progress on the scheme.
A spokesperson said: "Due to unforeseen ground conditions, the road closure at Sykes Farm on Trough Road (BB7 3BJ) has been extended until 30 October.
"This additional time is needed to allow the retaining wall repairs to be completed safely and efficiently while maintaining the highest standards of health and safety.
"Our work involves rebuilding a collapsed section of the wall, helping us to restore the road and reopen the highway to full capacity."
The road remains closed at the work site and no vehicles, cyclists or pedestrians are able to pass through the closure point.
A signed diversion route will continue to operate throughout the extended closure period.
The council said local residents have been kept informed of the changes and that contractors will continue taking steps to minimise any environmental impact caused by the works.

The spokesperson added: "We've written to local residents to keep them informed, and our contractor will continue to minimise environmental impacts wherever possible.
"Thank you for your continued patience and understanding while we carry out these important repairs."
Trough Road is a popular route through the Forest of Bowland, used by motorists, cyclists and visitors travelling between the Ribble Valley and Wyre areas.
The council hopes the repairs will allow the road to reopen to full capacity once the work is completed later this month.
