A Post Office worker was taken to hospital after being sprayed in the face with what is believed to have been barbecue lighter fluid during a robbery in Lancaster.

Police were called just before 8pm on Sunday (October 4) to the Post Office on Ulswater Road following reports that two men had entered the shop and attacked a member of staff.

According to Lancashire Police, the suspects, described as wearing all-black clothing and balaclavas, sprayed a man in his 50s in the face with a liquid thought to be barbecue lighter fluid before stealing a significant amount of cash from a safe.

The victim was taken to hospital for treatment but has since been discharged.

His injuries are not believed to be life-changing or life-threatening.

An investigation is under way and officers remain in the area carrying out CCTV enquiries and speaking to people who may have information.

Police have also increased reassurance patrols in the area while enquiries continue.

In an appeal for information, Lancaster Area Police said: “We know this will be concerning to hear about, but we want to reassure you that work is ongoing to identify those involved.

“As this time we don’t believe there to be any threat to the wider public.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident, has CCTV or dashcam footage from the area, or has noticed any suspicious activity is asked to contact police on 101 quoting log 1220 of October 4.
