A man has been charged with 19 counts of shop theft following a series of incidents in Nelson.

Najaf Khan, 45, of Stanley Street in Brierfield, is accused of stealing items including alcohol, cases of Coke Zero, and cakes from the Morrisons store on Colne Road.

He is due to appear at Blackburn Magistrates’ Court today, Monday, October 5.

The charges follow multiple reports of theft and a review of CCTV footage.

Backed by Lancashire Police and Crime Commissioner Clive Grunshaw, officers have focused on proactive patrolling, increased visibility and creating partnerships with retailers across the county to share intelligence and identify offenders.

They have also offered advice to businesses and ask owners if they have a shoplifter in their shop, to report them to police on 101 or online.

If they start using or threatening violence, or the crime is in progress, they are told to ring 999.

Shops and other business premises can also take part in Nice2Share, on the Lancashire Constabulary website, by registering CCTV cameras to help make the identification of offenders quicker and easier.
